How Many Galaxies Are There?

You may be one of those who love contemplating the vast space. If you are, then you must have seen enormous numbers of stars scattered in space, moving spontaneously, and these islands are called galaxies. Our sun, which we see, is a star in the Milky Way galaxy, and our galaxy contains billions of stars.

Light requires about 100 thousand years to pass from one side of our galaxy to the other side. Light travels about six million million miles in one year.

Through the discoveries that scientists obtained by means of the telescope, it was found that there are millions of galaxies moving beside our galaxy, and we know that there are three basic types of galaxies.

Spiral galaxies are the ones that take a spiral shape and are close to us, as they are about 2 million light-years away from us. It is a great spiral galaxy in the Andromeda group of stars. There are also elliptical galaxies, which are oval in shape and make up about 17% of the luminous galaxies. They usually contain stars, with little dust or gas.

As for irregular galaxies, they were named so because they have no shape, move randomly, and contain stars, dust, and gas.

The two galaxies nearest to the Milky Way are two irregular galaxies. There are also some small galaxies called dwarf galaxies. The smallest of them are a few hundred light-years away and contain only a few thousand stars. There may be more dwarf galaxies in space than large galaxies. Galaxies have separated from one another by hundreds of thousands of light-years, and they are usually found in groups or in the form of clusters containing between tens and thousands of galaxies.

The farthest galaxies that take the form of clusters are located millions of light-years away from the Milky Way, and there are galaxies that are so far from our galaxy that it is impossible to imagine the vastness of the distance between them.

Until now, the answer related to the number of galaxies existing in space is still vague.
