What Is the Solar Halo?Or “The Sun’s Halo”
You must have seen a total eclipse of the sun someday?! And therefore, you noticed the irregular glow emitted from the light spread around the darkened sun. This light is called the halo.
In order to understand what this halo is, we must know several things found in the sun. The surface of the sun is a compound of gases made up of four layers surrounding the sun, and this makes it transparent and not solid like the surface of the earth. The deepest layer is called the photosphere, and the two following layers are called the reversing layer and the chromosphere, and together they form the sun’s atmosphere. As for the last layer, it is the halo.
Each layer of these layers consists of gas.
The surface of the sun is what we see when we look toward the sun, and most of the time we see dark sunspots on this luminous surface.
The reversing layer is that layer extending for hundreds of miles outside the surface of the photosphere. It is never seen, but it can be studied by means of an instrument called a spectroscope.
Outside the reversing layer is the sun’s atmosphere, or the colored sphere, and its thickness reaches about 9 thousand miles. It is composed of hydrogen and helium gas. During a total solar eclipse, rays appear around the dark disk, consisting of silvery pearly lights. From the red side, clouds of colored flames rise to great heights, sometimes reaching more than one million miles! These clouds are called solar prominences, as they look like a great flame of fire.
Finally, we reach the outer layer called the halo. It is composed of light gaseous matter and is divided into two parts. There is an inner halo located beside the layer of the sun’s chromosphere, and it forms a pale yellow belt. The outer halo is white in color, with plumes extending outside it millions of miles from the edge of the sun.
This is a brief discussion about the layers surrounding the sun, but what lies beneath them still remains mysterious and unknown!
