What Was the Greatest Earthquake?

Were it not for the hardness and cohesion of the Earth’s crust, we would be exposed in a single day to several earthquakes. This is because there are a number of faults in the rocks of the Earth’s crust, and these faults can move by breaking a rock mass in front of them with force, which makes this friction turn into great energy that generates an earthquake.

There are two ways to describe an earthquake. It may be described by its strength, or by the damage it causes: loss of human life and destruction of private property are among the most common measures by which people measure the strength of an earthquake.

The most famous earthquakes that occurred in America was in San Francisco in 1906, as this earthquake resulted in a great fire in which 700 people died, and the material damage caused was estimated at about 425 million dollars.

In February of the year 1971, a strong earthquake occurred in the Los Angeles area, resulting in losses estimated at millions of dollars as compensation for houses, works, and roads.

In Lisbon, Portugal, an earthquake occurred in the year 1755. It destroyed the city, and about 30,000 people were killed as a result.

In the year 1908, an earthquake that occurred in Calabria and Sicily killed about 75,000 people.

In the year 1915, hundreds of cities and villages in central Italy were damaged as a result of an earthquake, and 30,000 people were killed because of it. Two earthquakes also occurred that caused great damage in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, and the Kansu region in China.

The Tokyo earthquake occurred in the year 1923, and caused the death of more than 100,000 people. It destroyed the entire city, and the city of Yokohama as well.

As for the China earthquake, it was in the year 1920. It covered more than 300 square miles and killed about 200,000 people. An earthquake may be strong, but its damage may be small and light, like the earthquake that occurred in the United States of America in 1811 and 1812, so that people hardly knew about it except with difficulty near the town of New Madrid and in Missouri. There were about 1,974 scattered earthquakes; some of them we feel, and others we feel from a distance of 400 miles. This area is considered one of the stable areas, so no great damage occurred.
