Why Do We Not Feel the Earth’s Rotation?

Many years ago, people believed that the Earth was fixed, and that the sun was the one that revolved around it.

What helped this belief was that people did not feel the movement of the Earth, and they noticed that things were fixed and did not move away from their places, including the water of the ocean?!

The Earth rotates in two ways: it revolves around the sun, and it rotates around its axis.

We do not feel this rotational movement because we are subject to Earth’s gravity, and also because of the air surrounding us and the waters of the oceans.

What we notice from the Earth’s rotation around its axis is the phenomenon of night and day. Without this rotation of the Earth, we would remain either on the illuminated side always, or on the dark side far from the sun. Through the Earth’s rotation around its axis, night and day alternate every 24 hours.

As for the Earth’s revolution around the sun, it is an important movement in our lives, and we notice it through the successive and changing seasons. We find this change in every season that passes in our lives. This revolution around the sun takes 365 and 1/4 days, and this is the year by which we measure the length of our lives and the extension of history.

The change of seasons occurs because of the tilt of the Earth’s axis, as this tilt or inclination reaches 23 and 1/2 degrees from the vertical position.

Each pole inclines toward the sun for half the year, and moves away from the sun during the other half. Likewise, the northern part of the Earth for six months receives sunlight and heat as summer, then the heat gradually decreases so that the cold season, or winter, begins.
