Why Preserving Video Game History Is Difficult

Games are cultural objects, not just disposable software. In 2022, the Museum of Modern Art reflected on the decade since its initial acquisition of 14 video games, placing them within its design collection. Yet recognition does not ensure access.

A 2023 study conducted for the Video Game History Foundation and Software Preservation Network estimated that 87% of historical games released in the United States were not commercially available.
